“안녕하세요” - "Hello"

by AHIYA 2025. 1. 15.

There are many languages in the world. There are about 7,000 languages.

: It is known that there are approximately 7,000 languages worldwide. However, this number can change over time. Some languages disappear, while new dialects or languages emerge. Additionally, the number of languages can vary depending on the regions where they are spoken and the number of people who use them.

Information about the number of languages worldwide is based on data from various research institutions and databases. Representative sources include:

Ethnologue: The most comprehensive language database in the world, which currently includes about 7,000 languages. Ethnologue provides various information such as the distribution of languages, the population of speakers, and the endangered status of languages.

Linguistic research: Various academic studies or papers published by linguists also provide estimates regarding the number of languages. For example, resources like "The World Atlas of Language Structures" discuss the characteristics of languages. These materials are updated over time, and since languages are endangered or disappearing, the exact number can change.

There must be a lot of greetings in that many languages, right?

1. English: Hello

2. Spanish: Hola

3. French: Bonjour

4. German: Hallo

5. Italian: Ciao

6. Portuguese: Olá

7. Russian: Зд тасу ̆т у ̆т (Zdravstvuyte)

There are so many other greetings.

Among them, I would like to introduce the greetings of Korea.

Basic Korean greeting format: 안녕하세요 (Annyeonghaseyo)

A simple greeting used with friends: "Annyeong"

A greeting used in the workplace or in public: "Annyeong hasimnika?"

So, what does "Annyeong" mean?

The "An" in "Annyeong" means "peaceful" or "comfortable."

The "nyeong" in "Annyeong" also means "peaceful" or "comfortable."

The meaning of "Annyeong" is "peaceful and comfortable."

When do we feel at peace?

When we're not hungry, not sick, not troubled, and not facing difficult situations, that’s when we feel at peace, right?

In Korean greetings, there is a wish for peace and well-being for the other person, as well as warmth.

"Did you eat? Are you hungry? Do you have any pain? Are you facing difficulties? Do you have any worries? Are your parents healthy?"

Why do Korean greetings often ask about each other’s well-being and concerns (news about whether someone is doing well or not, or asking about it as a form of greeting)?

Korea has a history of over 5,000 years.

At the same time, Korea has endured countless wars, almost too many to count.

And through all that time, Korea survived.

Is the friend I greeted yesterday still alive?

Are they safe?

Is there anyone in the family who is injured or has passed away?

As time and memories have accumulated, the well-being of each other has become very important to Koreans.

The year 2025 has arrived.

How are you all doing this year?

I hope that every day, every day, you are doing well.

We live in a world full of both big and small disputes and conflicts.

I sincerely hope and wish that no one will be hurt, sick, or hungry anymore.

You are not alone.

There are people next to you with whom you can greet each other with "Annyeonghaseyo."

In 2025, try greeting the people you meet every day.

"Annyeonghaseyo?“

※ Annyeonghaseyo. let's find the pronunciation and practice!
